Beetsterzwaag has a new and exciting future: a comprehensive expansion of the current Kunsthuis SYB is in development.

Beetsterzwaag is a small but cosy village in the district of Opsterland, Friesland. In the village stands Kunsthuis SYB. Since 2000 Kunsthuis SYB has been an open podium for visual artists and cultural events.

The house offers accommodation for artists, and the opportunity to work in a peaceful and friendly environment, either for a few days or indeed a few weeks. However, the house is and remains small. The space available is restricted, and the possibilities thus also.

The Kunsthuis approached NeuBuilt with a proposal for expansion. The aim was to preserve the current building fabric, and to take account of the relationship between old and new.

Think of the new Guggenheim in Bilbao (Spain) or the soon-to-come Pompidou in Metz (France). Both are trying to attract attention to these cities. In the same manner as these initiatives, this project offers the opportunity for the renewal and improvement of Beetsterzwaag, Opsterland and the whole of Friesland. Additionally, it will form an important point of attraction for the tourist industry.

The intention is that SYB stays SYB: the concept of the house will remain.
